U.S. Communities Standing Up Against ICE Raids
The first week of June 2025 marked a turning point in Trump's second administration. After videos surfaced of I.C.E. agents kidnapping people off the streets and at their immigration appointments, communities throughout the country rose up to protect their neighbors. In Los Angeles, massive peaceful protests were organized which resulted in Trump calling in the National Guard, against the wishes of California governor Newsom. The last time a president called the National Guard without local approval was in 1965 when President Johnson called in the guard to protect civil rights activists against the wishes of the conservative Alabama governor, George Wallace. On June 14, millions of Americans in small towns and major cities marched in the streets in what was called the "No Kings" protests. We are witnessing a critical threat to democracy and civil protections in the United States, but people throughout the country have demonstrated that they have every intention of fighting back against this regime.
