OPEN AIR DETENTION
Asylum seekers have been left to wait in custody for up to seven days with no shelter, no food, and limited water in what has become an open-air holding cell in between the two border walls near San Diego.

Over a hundred people are reported to be held in this new makeshift cell, including a family with a baby. These individuals have already crossed into the US as the official boundary is a bit further south of the first border wall. Being on US soil they should be able to apply for asylum or at the very least be processed and returned back to Mexico or their country of origin but that is not the case.

Instead, they are being forced to wait outside overnight for days until CBP removes them from between the border fences. Many of them had to either climb over, under or through the first fence risking injury only now to be held in pseudo-custody in a manner that goes against all detention standards.

This is not the first time that people have been detained between the walls. This practice has been going on since October of last year. While the local community has been making sure those detained have access to food, blankets, and other necessities it is not enough to keep people safe. The US can not continue to ignore the harm that our immigration policy and practices continue to cause people seeking protection.
