In another attempt to appear tough on immigration, the Biden administration has once again thrown the border under the bus. Just a week after its announcement, we are already feeling the negative effects of Biden’s new executive order, which not only fails to achieve its intended outcome but also exacerbates the existing pain, chaos and danger. People seeking safety are now stranded behind a barrier of concertina wire, facing Texas officials who only offer cruelty and contempt. On the other side, they encounter criminal organizations ready to prey on their desperation.
Nevertheless, life at the border persists. No legislation can extinguish hope. People seeking safety still find ways to move forward, and the border continues to welcome them. The perseverance of people on the move, striving to find a better life for their families and for themselves, is mirrored by the resilience of these communities. They continue to show up, offering support and compassion to those in need. The doctors from ClÃnica HOPE provide assistance to the people stranded behind the wire. In this way, border communities demonstrate that, despite political challenges, humanity and kindness can prevail, ensuring the border remains a place of refuge and opportunity.
Both the executive and legislative branches could learn from the example of real humanitarian assistance demonstrated by these border communities.
