Texas Troopers Separating Families in Apparent Policy Shift

The following article was first published in a newsletter from Beto O’Rourke on August 2, 2023.

Greg Abbott just took the next step in his campaign of cruelty at the border.

News just broke that Texas troopers are separating families — literally tearing children and babies away from their parents — as they try to seek refuge in our country.

Abbott’s new policy harkens back to one of the darkest stains on our country’s history, when the Trump administration stripped more than 5,000 children from their parents at the border in 2018.

While immense public pressure forced Trump to stop his family separation policy, the damage was permanent. At least 1,000 children remain separated. Some of them are missing.

Now Abbott is picking up where Trump left off. His state troopers have already separated at least 26 families at the border — and it’s unclear if and when he plans to reunite these children with their parents.

Abbott is hoping we turn a blind eye — but we can’t let him get away with this. Please share the news of his new family separation policy so that we can keep the pressure up and stop Abbott just like we stopped Trump.

Thanks for stepping up to stop this cruelty.
