San Diego Mesa College enthusiastically encourages and promotes contemporary community issues through its inspiring art exhibition, titled “Reimagining La Linea,” curated by the Fall 2025 Museum Studies Course.

Exhibit on View November 10 – December 16, 2025

Reception: Wednesday, November 12, 4-7 pm

Art Gallery – FA 103

Reimagining La Linea is an exhibition about migration that highlights the work of thirty-three artists and two collectives. Immigrants have been under attack under the current administration and have destabilized our democracy. The San Diego-Tijuana border region exemplifies how communities come together and respond through various platforms for expression and engagement. Supported by Alessandra Moctezuma, a curator and gallery director of Mesa College Gallery, and a professor of the Museum Studies course each semester, she shares her expertise with students. Her mentorship fosters a supportive community that helps students achieve their educational goals. This experience enables students to understand the realities of the art world and learn how to curate exhibitions that resonate with both the local community and the broader public.

Despite ongoing criticism, censorship, and suppression of free speech and street protests, Mesa College in San Diego actively engages its students and community through a course that provides practical knowledge. This community college aims to serve the public by giving a voice to students and community members, bringing everyone together to discuss meaningful topics that matter. In this museum studies course, students work closely with the curator at each step of the process of curating an exhibition, from selecting artists to helping install the artwork. This course culminates in an exhibition where students and local artists can showcase their work, fostering community involvement. While exhibitions featuring political viewpoints are common, this initiative is notable for combining academic learning with professional experience within an art museum program. The courses are designed to prepare students for degrees in art, art history, and museum studies.
