In honor of April being National Poetry month, el Tribuno brings you a poem from Jesus Nicasio, that speaks to the experience of being incarcerated. If you would like to write to Jesus, comment down below and we can connect you.Â
I’m surrounded by lost souls, locked away in a place full of empty promises.
A cross hangs around my neck
Reflecting its shield of light to repel evil.
Like an iron vest keeping me alive from this wreck.
The whole world, including myself, know I threw away my life into the ocean of fire.
The flames in its path, everything devoured.
Problems after problems, feeding my demon inside with darkness.
Sticking to my body like a fly, that spun my life out of control with a snap of its fingers.
I bargained my spirit to the two highest bidders, and still nothing was getting any better.
Making my heart even more colder and bitter.
The war ain’t over yet, this is not rock bottom.
I’ve been to hell and back, I still have few scars on body and soul to prove it.
The enemy wants me defeated.
Not knowing I come from a line of Elite Warriors.
Fighting alongside with me so that I can earn my stripes back
And I can finally go back home, and never look back.
