WHAT DOES A GOOD MIGRATION GOVERNANCE LOOK LIKE?

Americans are increasingly looking for better immigration policies and better solutions to migrant arrivals at the border, with many wanting better “border security.” And as the election year approaches, candidates from both parties are looking for border security “solutions.” But what is border security? Or – put in better terms – what would a good migration and border management look like?

We’ve had a test case over the past few years with stricter immigration laws in Texas, Arizona, and Florida. Even more, welcoming cities like Chicago have imposed caps on the time migrants can stay at local shelters. These policies have proven to be, time and time again, ineffective for both migrants and the broader communities. As our executive director noted in this recent interview with the Argentine press, they are largely wasteful of resources and end up putting individuals in danger more than ever.

The reality is that migration is not going anywhere. People will always have the right (and often the need) to migrate. Policy should not attempt to restrict and complicate the process but instead more effectively structure and regulate the process, for both the sake of those who are escaping impossible conditions and for destination communities because border security is no more and no less than a good management of migration and borders that smartly places human dignity at the core.
