Rio Grande Valley — The temperature is getting hotter and hotter than in past times say people of older age. The youth say it is the climate that is changing by the destruction of our mother earth. Here in the Rio Grande valley, the temperature reaches 110º-112º. It is impossible to work outside during the hours of 11:00 am. and 7:00 p.m.
However, “You have to support the family and pay the bills” say construction workers, gardeners, etc. That’s why Houston workers protested in July against the new law that abolishes the water requirements.
But politicians like Gregg Abbott don’t seem to care. They have reached the point, through laws, force these workers to work without 10-15 rest minutes. Even when the temperature is above the 100’s.
This governor is also committing atrocities against migrants seeking a better life for their families, by having them under the sun waiting for a chance to cross the Rio Grande.
The people most affected by these high temperatures are the elderly since many of them do not have air conditioning. There have already been cases of people falling seriously ill due to high temperatures, particularly the elderly.
The only good thing we can say about this intolerable weather is that farm workers are not suffering under these conditions because at the moment all agricultural work finished in July with the harvest of watermelon and melon.
We can confidently say that the climate of today did not exist 20-30 years ago. The fault of this situation falls on the corporations of the rich since they never cared if they polluted the environment. Simply out of their own interest to get richer at the expense of our world and the sweat of us workers.
We don’t have any other option but fight to leave a world with a clean environment. But this can only happen when we fight so hard in the electoral process and organize ourselves into organizations with a new vision for our working class.
