Editor’s Note:Â The following article was originally published by Community to Community in an e-newsletter on March 25, 2025.
This morning, March 25, 2025 farmworker leader and organizer Alfredo Juarez, better known as Lelo, was detained violently by ICE. He was on his way to drop off his partner at her work place, and ICE agents broke his car window when he tried to exercise his rights. We feel this is a targeted attack on Farmworker leadership, and we must not allow this to continue. Â
Lelo’s leadership and activism and leadership have been vital in protecting farmworkers and immigrants rights and well-being. He has been serving our communities since he was 12 years old and continues to be a guiding light.Â
We are demanding that our friends contact the Attorney General, Governor, ICE Detention Center in Ferndale, and our elected leaders for them to take action and help in the release of Lelo.Â
We must not allow any more attack on workers. As Unions, community organizations, student groups, and people who have decency, We Demand That ICE stays out of Washington and let workers be at peace. Immigrants are not the enemy, we are part of the worker movement towards justice which includes fair wages, healthcare, education, housing, and solidarity. Â
