The border is a destructive force: Joshua Rubin of Witness at the Border

In this interview with the People’s Tribune recorded Dec. 4, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas, Joshua Rubin discusses the Journey for Justice that began on Dec. 3 in Brownsville, Texas. Rubin is the founder of Witness at the Border, which organized the Journey for Justice, a 2,200-mile pilgrimage along the US-Mexico border from Brownsville to San Ysidro, California, to document what is happening to migrants and refugees as the result of US immigration policy.

Marina Vazquez Remembers Tornillo Detention Center

Marina Vazquez discusses how it feels to be back in Tornillo where the largest detention camp for migrant children exited. It was supposed to be a temporary solution, but a one-month contract to operate the camp stretched to two months, then three, then into the holidays as its population swelled to 6,000.

Journey for Justice Stopped in Uvalde, Texas

On May 24, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen young students and two teachers were murdered that day while seventeen others were injured. In December 2022, el Tribuno del Pueblo and the People's Tribune met with some of the family members as the community continues to heal from this tragedy.

After Title 42: Border Enforcement Zone in San Ysidro, California

In May 2023, el Tribuno del Pueblo and the People's Tribune visited migrants at the open air corridor between San Ysidro and Tijuana. The corridor is under U.S. jurisdiction, meaning that Border Patrol has to meet certain requirements when it comes to ensuring the wellbeing of migrants. Pedro Rios from the American Friends Service Committee speaks on the conditions migrants face at the corridor and how the community has stepped up and where the U.S. has failed.

1st Anniversary: Journey for Justice to Show the Immorality of the immigration Policy

This December marks the 1st anniversary of the Journey for Justice organized by Witness at the Border. Beginning on December 2, 2022, people from all over the country caravanned from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific, as Joshua Rubin writes, “see the truth behind the border wall of lies, to look into the eyes of our sisters and brothers on the other side.
