Border agents shot and killed a Mexican national inside the Ysleta Border Patrol station in eastern El Paso, Texas. Manuel González Morán, a 33-year-old man from Ciudad Juárez, was shot twice and later passed away at the hospital due to his injuries.
The security camera in the room was not working at the time so there have been some concerns about the various reports that have come out about the incident. Allegedly Morán had grabbed a pair of scissors after breaking free from a holding cell and was refusing to listen to orders to stop.
It is still unclear how many were in the room during the incident but the fact that it had to escalate to the point of using a gun is a sober reminder of the prevalence of force in immigration enforcement. As of September CBP had recorded 17 use-of-force incidents by agency personnel using their firearms during the 2022 fiscal year.
It had not even been a week since two migrants were shot on the side of the road here in El Paso. Earlier this year migrants passed away trapped inside a trailer truck in San Antonio. Every day people place themselves at risk of drowning in the river or dying of heat exhaustion in the desert in their attempt to get into the US.
These are symptoms of a system that does not value the lives of those most vulnerable. Until we restore asylum at the border and create a humane immigration system mothers, fathers and children will continue to find themselves at risk.
