Today’s rulings and what’s next
Editor’s Note: The following article was originally sent in an e-newsletter by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) following the 6-3 Supreme Court decision on June 30th, 2026 to preserve birthright citizenship.
Today’s Supreme Court decision reaffirming birthright citizenship is an important victory. The Court recognized what the Constitution has long made clear: people born in the United States are U.S. citizens.
That matters. It is a relief for millions of families.
But today’s ruling does not erase the larger pattern.
Just last week, the Court allowed the administration to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian nationals while legal challenges continue and sharply limited the ability of people seeking asylum at the border. Today, it also allowed states to exclude transgender youth from participating in school sports. Earlier decisions weakened voting rights protections and expanded presidential power over immigration enforcement.
These attacks are connected. They reflect a broader effort to erode civil rights, concentrate power, and divide our communities.
For forty years, ICIRR has understood that protecting our communities requires more than winning individual court cases. It requires organized people, strong coalitions, and a movement capable of defending our rights no matter who is in power.
Today’s decision is worth celebrating. But our work is far from over.
As this administration and its allies continue to attack immigrant communities and pursue an authoritarian agenda, we will continue organizing alongside our members and partners to protect our neighbors, defend our democracy, and build the power our communities deserve.
Stay vigilant. Keep organizing. Build a bigger movement.
In solidarity,
Lawrence Benito
