Thank you, Mario Galvan, for always speaking truth to power. Rest in Power and much love!

Editor’s Note: The following statement was originally published by Dan Bacher.

Mario Galvan was one of the founding members of the Sacramento Zapatista Solidarity Committee and had gone a number of times to support the Zapatistas at events in Mexico and around the nation. He invited me to go as a participant at a meeting of La Otra Campana in Tijuana, BCN, Mexico in October 2026. I was there with Galvan and another (now deceased) peace and solidarity activist.

Mario was also a longtime member of SALA, the group that resulted from the merger of the Central America Action Committee and the Sacramento Zapatista Committee a number of years ago. In his full-time work, he was an art teacher. As an artist, he created many excellent posters and flyers for community events.

Under his leadership, Sacramento Peace Action and the Sacramento Area Black Caucus co-sponsored events such as the “Radical Side of Dr. King” and the early days of the MLK march.
